Michigan basketball is still working on transforming its roster for the 2023-24 season, and a familiar face is an option. Rutgers guard Paul Mulcahy entered the transfer portal as a graduate on Friday, and the Wolverines have had some early contact.

According to college hoops insider Adam Zagoria, Kentucky, Kansas State, Michigan and West Virginia were among the early teams to kick the tires on the now-former Scarlett Knight.

Mulcahy averaged 8.3 points, 4.9 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game last season in Piscataway. He is also a good defender with great size and length at 6-foot-7, 213 pounds.

From his Rutgers bio on the team website:

Paul Mulcahy is a 6-6 pass-first point guard who arrived “On the Banks” with a winning reputation. The first New Jersey High School boys’ basketball player to average a triple-double in 26 years (1992-93; LaMarr Greer). Tenacious competitor with a very high basketball IQ who plays the game “The Right Way”. Mulcahy has grown into the ultimate floor general in his time with the Scarlet Knights.

A 2022-23 Big Ten Honorable Mention has had one of the best winning careers in Rutgers basketball history and is currently fourth all-time in school history in career assists (457 assists). He has scored 818 career points, has 457 rebounds and 112 career steals. Mulcahy has run the Scarlet Knights offense at the point guard position for the last two seasons and has shot a lethal 45.1 percent from the field in career (308-of-683).

Michigan has added three transfers to the roster for next season, all who signed with the program this week. Guard Nimari Burnett (Alabama), forward/wing Tray Jackson (Seton Hall) and forward Olivier Nkamhoua (Tennessee) are all expected to come in and compete for starting jobs. With Michigan needing to replace the production lost from Kobe Bufkin, Jett Howard and Hunter Dickinson leaving the program, it has been an all-hands on deck effort to get things headed back in the right direction.

Michigan has a pair of scholarships remaining after adding the three transfers and a true freshman in 2024 in three-star combo guard George Washington III. The Wolverines might not yet be done adding to the roster, either. The roster could use another guard and a true backup center to soon-to-be sophomore Tarris Reed.

The Wolverines went 18-16 last season, missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015 and splitting the games they played in the NIT with a win over Toledo and a loss at Vanderbilt. The goal is to get back to the tournament in 2023-24 and get some momentum back for head coach Juwan Howard.
