Michigan basketball runs through Tarleton State, moves to 4-1
ANN ARBOR – The Michigan Wolverines are now 4-1 on the season after a 72-49 win over Tarleton State on Thursday night in Ann Arbor.
Junior wing Roddy Gayle Jr. led the Wolverines with 16 points, while junior point guard Tre Donaldson and sophomore forward Sam Walters had 13 points apiece. Graduate center Vlad Goldin had 12 points.
Next up for Michigan is a trip to Florida for the Ft. Myers Tipoff, starting Monday night with a game against Virginia Tech. It will play either Xavier or South Carolina on Wednesday.
First half
Michigan got its first points of the game on a Tre Donaldson layup and a foul at the 19:21 mark, leading to a 3-0 lead after the free throw make. Nimari Burnett added a layup at 18:38 and a free throw make 33 seconds later, building the lead out to 6-0. Tarleton State got on the board with a three-pointer from Bubu Benjamin (17:45), answered on the scoreboard by a three-pointer by Burnett at the 16:50 mark, making it a 9-3 game. Less than a minute later, Vlad Goldin scored his first bucket of the night on a putback dunk, extending the lead to 11-3 at 16:13.
Tarleton went on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 11-all at the 12:29 mark, finally stopped by a layup from Goldin. Tarleton answered with a layup of its own to bring the game to 13-13 at the 11:19 mark. Michigan would go on a 7-0 run from that point with layups from Justin Pippen, Roddy Gayle Jr., and an and-1 basket from Goldin to go up 20-13 at the 9:03 mark. The run was stopped by Benjamin, who hit another three to bring the deficit to 20-16 at 8:38. Gayle pushed things back to 7-points in favor of U-M with a three-pointer to put the Wolverines up 23-16 (8:27).
The Texans would not go away, though, using another 8-0 run to take a 24-23 lead over Michigan with 6:54 left in the half. U-M punched back with layups from Sam Walters and Donaldson, going back up 27-24 at the 5:37 mark. Gayle added a pair of free throws to bring the lead to 29-24 with 5:22 to go.

Tarleton State hit a pair of free throws at the 4:26 mark, followed by a jumper 30 seconds later to bring the deficit back to within 1 at 29-28. Michigan put its foot on the gas from there with a 10-0 run, headlined by a pair of layups from Gayle and two threes from Walters, to push the lead to 39-28 with 47 seconds left. The Texans scored on a layup with 38 seconds to go before a LJ Cason free throw with 26 seconds left put Michigan up 40-30 heading into the locker room.
Second half
Michigan came out in the second half on fire, starting with a 10-0 run thanks to free throw makes from Goldin and Donaldson, followed by layups from Goldin, Wolf and Donaldson to take a 50-30 lead at the 16:21 mark. Tarleton State ended the run with a layup at 15:49 prior to the under-16 media timeout, trimming the lead to 50-32. Wolf hit a pair of free throws, answered by a pair from Tarleton State to put the score at 52-34 with 15:15 remaining. Donaldson pushed it back to 20 with a layup, answered by a 6-0 run from the Texans to trip the deficit to 54-40 with 11:20 remaining.
Gayle ended the run with a dunk at the 10:13 mark. A pair of Tarleton State free throws were answered by one at the line from Goldin, putting the score at 57-42 with 9:22 to go. Michigan would lead 57-44 at the under-8 timeout (7:13 remaining).
Michigan put its foot on the gas in the final 7 minutes, going on a 9-0 run to build the lead out to 22 points at the 4:25 mark at 66-44. Tarleton State went on a 5-0 run to trim the lead to 66-49 with 3:27 to play before a 6-0 run closed things out for the Wolverines, securing win No. 4 on the season.
