Michigan had its Tuesday night game against Purdue – Fort Wayne cancelled due to COVID issues with the Mastadons program. The Wolverines instead held an intra-squad scrimmage.

Scrimmage one was a straight-forward 20 minute scrimmage, starters against the backups. The Michigan starters dominated, led by sophomore center Hunter Dickinson’s 14 points. Freshman Caleb Houstan added 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting, including 2-for-2 three-point shooting.

Terrance Williams led the Maize team with seven points in a 39-16 loss.

The Michigan Blue team scored 17 points off turnovers, including four from freshman Kobe Bufkin. The Maize struggled to only 6-for-26 shooting compared to 17-for-29 for the Blue.

The second scrimmage consisted of split teams with the starters on opposite squads. The two Michigan teams played 10 minutes of man-to-man defense and 10 minutes of zone.

The Blue team, led by freshman point guard Frankie Collins’ 10 points and four assists, beat the Maize, 46-42. Fifth-year senior guard Eli Brooks finished with 17 points on 4-for-5 three-point shooting.

Houstan made four of eight triples on his way to a team-leading 14 points for the Maize squad.

Michigan will face UCF in its next game, a Dec. 30 contest in Orlando.

Head coach Juwan Howard said Tuesday the safety of the players was paramount in the decision to cancel the game with Purdue-Fort Wayne.

“My first concern is for coach [Jon] Coffman and his players,” the Michigan coach said. “I have said many times that we are living in a new world, and we need to continue to be safe and diligent with taking care of each other.

“While we are disappointed we can’t play, we just want to make sure everyone is, and feels, safe and healthy.”
