Michigan basketball to visit St. John's for Gavitt Games in 2023-24
Michigan Wolverines basketball‘s non-conference schedule has a new addition, according to a report from Rocco Miller. The Maize and Blue will take on St. John’s in the Gavitt Games, which features Big Ten vs. Big East matchups, Nov. 13 at Madison Square Garden.
“Official announcement for all of the 2023 Gavitt Games matchups are likely to come in the next month,” Miller added.
Michigan has typically drawn pro-Wolverine crowds in New York City, including in the 2018 Big Ten Tournament, which the Wolverines won.

Neither Michigan nor St. John’s made the NCAA Tournament last season. That was the Wolverines’ first time missing the Big Dance since 2015. But St. John’s has grown accustomed to seeing its campaign conclude with the Big East Tournament. The Red Storm hasn’t made the tournament since 2018-19, when it was a No. 11 seed and lost to Arizona State in the first round.
St. John’s fired head coach Mike Anderson after four seasons and made a splash by hiring national championship winning head man Rick Pitino, who was previously at Iona. Pitino was fired from Louisville in 2017. His last game as the Cardinals’ head coach was a 73-69 upset loss to Michigan in the NCAA Tournament round of 32. Louisville beat Michigan in the 2013 national title game, but the win was later vacated.

Michigan is 15-14 against non-conference opponents over the last two seasons.

Other participants for that multi-team event are Arkansas, Memphis, North Carolina, Northern Iowa, Stanford, Texas Tech and Villanova. Michigan will play at Oregon Dec. 2 and versus Florida in Charlotte as part of the Jumpman Invitational later that month.
