Michigan Board of Regents approves three major athletics projects – including new locker rooms, alcohol sales
The Michigan Wolverines athletic department is set to get a handful of upgrades for the football and basketball programs, in addition to alcohol sales at the big three venues. The Board of Regents on Thursday announced and approved plans for new locker rooms at Schembechler Hall and for the men’s and women’s basketball programs.
Starting with Schembechler Hall, the locker rooms are set to be renovated and expanded for the first time since 2009 which will enhance the locker, shower and team gathering areas. The $14 million project was funded privately via donations to the athletic department. Construction will be completed in Summer 2024.
A locker room renovation for the William Davidson Player Development Center, which houses men’s and women’s basketball at Michigan, will also take place. The cost of that project is estimated at $10 million.
Integrated Architecture will handle both projects, per the U-M release.
Alcohol sales at the Big House, Crisler Center and Yost Ice Arena are also in the plans and could come as early as the start of 2024.

Here’s what the release had to say about the alcohol sales:
The University of Michigan is moving forward with plans to apply for liquor licenses that could potentially allow the sale of alcohol at Crisler Center, Michigan Stadium and Yost Ice Arena. as early as Jan. 1, 2024.
The Board of Regents voted Oct. 19 to authorize asking the Michigan Liquor Control Commission to issue liquor licenses at the three athletic venues. The board also voted to implement licenses for Crisler and Yost as soon as possible for the current seasons.
Implementation for Michigan Stadium will be voted on at a later date, and after careful consideration and review of data and the experiences at the other two venues.
If approved by the state, alcohol would be available for purchase at U-M intercollegiate sporting events at the three venues, as well as during a small number of non-athletic events each calendar year.
“Moving forward, in terms of facility work, we will be doing a renovation of the football locker room”, Brian Kegler, Executive Associate Director of Development at the University of Michigan, said on the Conqu’ring Heroes podcast with Jon Jansen recently. “Probably after the season we’ll get moving on that – that’s a $14 million project.
“In addition, the Men’s and Women’s and basketball locker rooms, and renovation will start after the season for those respective sports. And each one has not had any real attention to it in at least a decade. As you know, that’s something that you continue to have to pay attention to, and refurbish, and keep it up to the caliber you would expect to see at Michigan.”
Michigan recently wrapped a $41 million project aimed at improving the scoreboards at the Big House and production studios inside Crisler Center. Now, we know what’s coming next.
