Michigan Wolverines defensive back Amorion Walker entered the transfer portal on Thursday, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. He will have two years of eligibility remaining at the college level.

Walker played in six games this season at Michigan as a reserve at cornerback after entering the program as a freshman at wide receiver. He had one career catch for four yards in 2022 and had three sacks and a pass defended this year.

Walker was a three-star recruit and the No. 470 player in the country out of Louisiana in the 2022 class, per the On3 Industry Ranking. It also ranked him as the No. 76 wide receiver in the class.

Standing at 6-3, 180 pounds, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh and company convinced him to try his hand at defensive back, citing his elite athleticism and change of direction skills. The experiment was designed to maximize his movement ability and get him on the field faster with depth concerns at cornerback.

Michigan made the switch with Walker last winter and every day brought about valuable reps. However, he did not have a great showing, leading everyone to believe his progress might take a little longer than expected.

“I thought he did really good, really well. Every day was a learning experience for him and really kind of epitomized better today than yesterday, better tomorrow than today. And coach [Steve Clinkscale]’s doing a great job with him. So really feel good. Really feel good about how he’s coming along,” Harbaugh said after spring ball ended.

Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter had also praised his progress and development in the leadup to the season.

“What I say is he has the traits, the skills to be able to play the position. He hasn’t played the position enough to be really, really comfortable yet. I think, you know, he might not like me saying this but I think one of the best things that happened to him was the spring game and going through a little bit of adversity, having guys make plays.”

Walker missed time in fall camp and the early part of the season before returning to the field on Sept. 30 at Nebraska. Heading into next season, Michigan has Will Johnson set to return as the team’s undisputed No. 1 but will have questions on the other side of him. DJ Waller, Jyaire Hill, Ja’Den McBurrows and Myles Pollard are among the projected returners who could compete for playing time.
