Michigan Wolverines football lost a player to the NCAA transfer portal just four days before taking on Alabama in the College Football Playoff. Freshman cornerback Cameron Calhoun entered his name into the database Thursday afternoon.

The 6-0, 173-pounder redshirted this season, playing in just two games, meaning he has four years of eligibility remaining.

Calhoun was buried on the depth chart as a freshman, playing just 13 defensive snaps in two contests — six against UNLV and seven versus Bowling Green. The Wolverines have started sophomore Will Johnson and graduate Josh Wallace at outside corner this season, with graduate Keshaun Harris, freshman DJ Waller Jr. and sophomore Amorion Walker all also ahead of Walker in the pecking order.

Calhoun was a three-star recruit in the 2023 class, checking in as the No. 423 overall prospect according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He ranked No. 46 among cornerbacks and No. 12 among players in Ohio.

The Michigan cornerback hails from Cincinnati Winton Woods, where he is the career interceptions leader with 14. During his senior year of high school, he totaled 52 tackles including three tackles for loss, 15 pass breakups and 5 interceptions.

Last year at this time, Calhoun was an early enrollee and got the opportunity to join Michigan for its CFP / Fiesta Bowl practices. While in Arizona, co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach Steve Clinkscale shared how impressed he was with Calhoun and classmate Jyaire Hill.

“The rest of the team, their teammates, their peers, the rest of the DBs, have really accepted them very fast because they see their talent,” Clinkscale said at the time. “They see their ability. I’m very open and honest with our group, everybody knows where they stand. So the players understand we got to continue to build on this, continue to bring in top-tier talent. And when you see these two guys out there doing what they do just naturally without much coaching and adjusting right now, just naturally, it kind of opens everybody’s eyes that we were heading in the right direction.

“And the players have really adjusted well with them and brought them out like little brothers. … We haven’t had taken one step back with these two guys. Like they practice so hard. And they do a great job. I’m excited for them.”
