Michigan graduate assistant Dylan Roney planning to join Jim Harbaugh in Los Angeles
Michigan had hoped to keep graduate assistant Dylan Roney on staff, but word a week ago was he was leaning heavily toward joining new Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh in L.A. Today, sources extremely close to him tell us that is indeed his plan.

Roney helped with the defensive pass rushers and got credit from many for their improvement. Defensive line coach Mike Elston thought so highly of him that he singled him out with praise in week two of the 2022 season, and some felt he might be hired as U-M linebackers coach.
“Starting off, I want to give a shout-out to coach Dylan Roney, who works with me directly with the defensive line,” Elston said. “We worked primarily with our edge position, and he’s a fantastic resource. I don’t know that he gets enough credit, because he’s behind the scenes a little bit, but he does a great job for us. And I want to make sure I put that out there.”
Roney was a three-year starter at Ferris State, where he was a second team All-Conference selection and 2017 second team Academic All-American pick. Ferris State was 34-6 in his three years as a starter, including a trip to the 2016 DII semifinals. He joined the program first as a graduate assistant then as defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator and was a defensive analyst at Illinois before joining Michigan. There, he collaborated with the defensive coaching staff to implement plans designed to strategically improve the defense.

He also became an outstanding recruiter. From a recent article from our Holland:
“Michigan analyst Dylan Roney has been a huge asset for Michigan on the recruiting trail. Remember, Roney led the way with EDGE signees Devon Baxter, Lugard Edokpayi and Dominic Nichols this cycle — all four-star recruits — and made in-home visits with the staff in December. Our Chris Balas reported that Roney may be heading to the Los Angeles Chargers with Harbaugh. Right now, I’m pretty pessimistic about Roney staying put.
“As I mentioned yesterday, I would love for Moore to make a push to keep him on staff — potentially as the linebackers coach. Roney is a rising star on the recruiting trail, and it appears the pass rushers on the roster are very fond of him as well.”
However, he’s now planning on joining Harbaugh’s staff in L.A.
