ANN ARBOR – The Michigan Wolverines are in the middle of spring football amid a change at offense coordinator. Chip Lindsey is helming that side of the ball these days while coaching the quarterbacks, and a pair of his peers are impressed with how well he has fit in.

Michigan wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy spoke to the media on Monday afternoon, playing coy about the nuts and bolts of the system but said that it should provide more opportunity for his group to shine.

“I mean, for the most part, the terminology for us has been good because it’s very similar,” Bellamy told the media on Monday. “But he’s an innovative, smart guy. Been around a lot of football. Really, he’s saying the same things, just calling it differently. I’m trying to talk without giving too much. But it’s been great.

“Has he opened it up? I just think it’s more opportunities, we’ll just say that. More opportunities for the receivers. And those guys know they have to be detailed in everything they do. It’s been great. Chip [has] been an amazing addition. The boys love him, all the coaches love him. It’s a vibe with him [with] the Southern flair. He’s smart, he’s intelligent, he’s a great guy. We love the Southern accent.”

More opportunities for the Michigan wide receivers in practice mean more work for the defensive backs in practice. Position coach LaMar Morgan raved about Lindsey’s offense and the work his group is getting in spring ball.

“The receivers, I think they’ve always done a good job,” Morgan said. “I think the offense, Coach Lindsey and everybody on that side of the ball have done a great job of challenging us more. They still do what you are all used to with the smashmouth football, but throwing the ball around the yard. These guys can make throws from the opposite hash on an 18-yard comeback and the ball’s on the money. You’ve got to defend the whole grass with this offense, which I think is always good. They can go tempo and they can slow it down. They can get 11-12 personnel and still do all the different sets. So I think that’s what’s unique now. They’re doing a really good job.

New faces at wide receiver and what Michigan says is better depth are potential game-changers for a growing and developing offense. Morgan said the group of wideouts has become his favorite on the team other than his own.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys stepping up,” Morgan said. “Every day somebody does something special. I know people talk about [Jamar Browder, Andrew Marsh and Donaven McCulley]. Then Fred Moore is doing a great job. I’m biased to all the receivers. We go against them. Those are probably my favorite group on the team besides my guys. But those guys have done a great job competing, being physical in the run game. Coach Bellamy, Coach Soup, and [Jack] Tuttle have done a great job with the receivers. So there’s a lot of really good battles. We’re not going to get good if we don’t get better on both sides of the ball.

“When they won a natty here, they had the most depth probably. I mean, the DBs, their backups were like pros. If we can get that back and get that being very competitive, that’s how you win. We’ve got to have the most competitive roster in college football. So that’s kind of our goal.”
