Gray finished the season with 46 tackles and seven pass break-ups, benefiting from new Michigan coordinator Mike Macdonald’s versatile defense. He’d played primarily man-to-man defense in former coordinator Don Brown’s scheme.
“I do think it’s going to be a really good change. I was ready for a change schematically,” Gray said before the year. “This is going to prepare us more for the next level. It’s going to allow us to compete and make plays on the ball which is what I enjoy, so I’m excited for it.
“I’m very excited to show I can do more than just stand in front of a guy and press him. We learned a lot this offseason just conceptually.”

It showed during the year. Though Gray struggled in a Michigan Orange Bowl loss to Georgia, he earned third-team All-Big Ten honors from the media this season. He’s started 20 of the 34 games in which he’s appeared the last four years, all in the last two seasons.
He leaves with experience in several defenses.
“It’s always good, especially playing my position, to mix it up and to give offenses a different look,” he said. “They’re not just knowing what you’re in and what you’re doing, how you’re approaching them every time. Being able to mix it up this year is going to help us a lot.”
Gray joins Michigan defensive ends David Ojabo and Aidan Hutchinson, tackle Chris Hinton, linebacker Josh Ross and safety Daxton Hill as starters having declared. Corners Darrion Green-Warren and Andre Seldon have entered their names into the transfer portal.
