Michigan Wolverines football appears to have re-added a familiar face to the community. Former Charlotte head coach Biff Poggi now appears in the U-M directory, signaling he has come back after two stints under Jim Harbaugh.

Poggi was fired in November and visited head coach Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines as rumors swirled about a potential return to Ann Arbor. He went 6-16 in two seasons on the job and was fired with two games remaining.

“It was great having Biff back,” Moore said during Ohio State week. “I’m very close with Biff and he worked with me directly when he was here. We’re excited and we’ll work those things out. A possibility to have him back and I’m looking forward to it.”

Poggi, who turned Baltimore St. Frances Academy into a national powerhouse, has served Michigan in two different stints as Harbaugh’s associate head coach. He first joined the program during the 2016 season while his son, Henry Poggi, was a fullback on the team, in an analyst role. Poggi rejoined Michigan ahead of the 2021 season in the associate head coach role as Harbaugh’s right-hand man. He left after the 2022 campaign to take the head coaching job at Charlotte.

“Biff’s a great mentor and has been that for me,” Harbaugh told The Athletic in a Poggi profile. “He likes to scheme it up, and he knows how to coach and helps coach the coaches. … As far as helping me personally, there’s not too many decisions that I make that I don’t run by Biff and we talk it out.”

“He’s got it all. I’d work for Biff. His relationship to everybody else is never king-to-subject. It’s friend-to-friend. It’s collaborative and always about the team.”

Prior to his time at Michigan, St. Frances and Charlotte, Poggi has coached at The Citadel and nearly 27 years at The Gilman School in Maryland.

Poggi’s role and official title have not yet been disclosed, but it would not be a surprise to see him return to the job he held under Harbaugh as a liaison for Moore. Michigan’s only other major staff hire this offseason came at offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, firing Kirk Campbell and replacing him with former UNC OC/QBs coach Chip Lindsey.
