Michigan Flips Four-Star Virginia Tech QB Commit Alex Orji
Michigan has scored a signing day flip.
Four-star 2022 Garland (Texas) Sachse quarterback Alex Orji backed out of his verbal pledge to Virginia Tech and signed with Michigan on Wednesday morning.
“I love the academics,” Orji said. “The football and athletics overall have been doing great in the Big Ten for years. Coach (Matt) Weiss has experience with the type of quarterback I am.”
Orji originally picked up an offer from Michigan in the winter but decided to commit to Virginia Tech in April. He also held offers Baylor, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Virginia, Texas Tech and others.
Orji seemed content with his commitment to Virginia Tech until the Hokies underwent a coaching change. That allowed Michigan to get Orji on campus for an official visit over the weekend.
Both head coach Jim Harbaugh and quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss knocked it out of the park and played big roles in his recruitment.

“Coach Harbaugh said his favorite thing about a quarterback is putting the ball in the hands of the player he thinks is the best on the field,” Orji said. “He said he liked my film and the way I handled the ball. Coach Weiss reiterated what Coach Harbaugh said. He also said that he liked my leadership and that I’m a student-athlete of high character.”
At 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, Orji is a dual-threat quarterback with a strong arm and the ability to make plays with his feet. He is Michigan’s second quarterback take this cycle, joining fellow four-star prospect Jayden Denegal.
Orji is ranked as the No. 19 athlete and No. 419 overall prospect nationally, per the On3 Consensus.
