Wolverine TV: Michigan ATH commit Jason Hewlett talks commitment, recruiting close friend
Almost four weeks off his verbal commitment to Michigan, which occurred two days after the win over Ohio State on Thanksgiving weekend, 2023 Youngstown (Ohio) Chaney three-star athlete Jason Hewlett is gearing up for his early signing period event on Wednesday.
Hewlett, the No. 16 overall senior prospect in the state of Ohio and ranked in the top 600 in the country, according to the On3 Consensus, is among the four total Ohio natives in the 2023 class who are committed to the Wolverines. His public announcement in late-November also marked the final of four-straight pledges from Ohio.
“I’m feeling great. This process has been long so I’m just ready to sign on the dotted lines, get everything over with, and enjoy the moment,” Hewlett said.
The Wolverine met up with Hewlett at his school on Monday for an exclusive interview, discussing his journey to becoming a student-athlete at Michigan after decommitting from Cincinnati, recruiting fellow Chaney teammate and Michigan commit D’Juan Waller Jr. to the class, and his relationship with co-defensive coordinator Steve Clinkscale, who was the primary recruiter for Hewlett.

“I just fell in love with Michigan right when I first got there. I wasn’t even going to go up there, at first, because I told (the coaching staff) that I was locked in (to Cincinnati). But going up there was the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” Hewlett said.

Hewlett has an On3 NIL Valuation of $15.4K with 4,700 combined followers on Instagram and Twitter. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
