Michigan football: 9 Wolverines invited to 2023 NFL Combine
Michigan football will once again be well-represented during the 2023 NFL Draft process. The list of invitees to the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis was made official on Wednesday morning with 9 former Wolverines making the cut, third most of any school.
Wide receiver Ronnie Bell, offensive tackle Ryan Hayes, kicker Jake Moody, defensive lineman Mike Morris, center Olu Oluwatimi, punter Brad Robbins, tight end Luke Schoonmaker, defensive lineman Mazi Smith and cornerback DJ Turner all received invites. Cornerback Gemon Green was the only declared Wolverine to not make the list.
This year, the NFL Combine will run from Feb. 27 through March 6 from Indianapolis with events taking place at both the Indianapolis Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium. On-field workouts begin on March 2 with defensive linemen and linebackers, March 3 for defensive backs and special teamers, March 4 for quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends and March 5 for offensive linemen and running backs. Each position group will have podium sessions with the media the day before their on-field workouts.

Who might get drafted the highest?
Most mock drafts do not have any Michigan players inside of the first round, but a big showing in Indianapolis for any of them could help boost their stock. Turner and Smith have been the two who have been going the highest in recent mocks as second-round-caliber prospects. Most of Michigan’s players are expected to come off the board on the draft’s third day in rounds 4 through 7.
Turner went No. 39 overall (second round) in a recent mock draft from ESPN’s Matt Miller:
“The selection of quarterback C.J. Stroud in Round 1 would give the Panthers an anchor, but now the team must find answers throughout the rest of the roster. Scouts expect Turner to be one of the winners of the combine, thanks to his world-class speed and agility. The Panthers have Jaycee Horn on one side and Donte Jackson in the slot, and adding Turner would make this a formidable young cornerback group.“
In the same mock draft, Smith went 42nd to the Cleveland Browns:
“The Browns’ first pick in the 2023 draft aims to shore up holes in the defense. Smith is one of the most impressive movers in the defensive tackle class and has NFL scouts talking about his rare short-area burst and power. However, 6-3, 337-pound Smith had just one sack in 2022, and teams will be doing their homework on his misdemeanor gun possession charge from October.“
The 2023 NFL Draft is set for April 27-29 from Kansas City, Missouri, this year’s host city. Round 1 will take place Thursday night, while Rounds 2 and 3 will play out on Friday. The draft concludes Saturday with rounds 4 -7. The draft will be broadcast via ESPN, ABC and NFL Network.
