Newsstand: Aidan Hutchinson opens as favorite for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year
Former Michigan Wolverines EDGE rusher Aidan Hutchinson was barely in the NFL for 24 hours before receiving accolades. The No. 2 overall pick to the Detroit Lions opened as DraftKings’ odds-on favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year honors (+400).
Coming in behind Hutchinson is No. 5 overall pick Kayvon Thibodeaux at +450 (New York Giants) and No. 1 overall pick Travon Walker at +550.
Hutchinson would be Michigan’s first player to win the award since Charles Woodson in 1998. He would be the fourth Lion to pull it off, joining Ndamukong Suh, Al “Bubba Baker and Lem Barney.
Hutchinson, fellow EDGE David Ojabo, safety Daxton Hill, running back Hassan Haskins and offensive tackle Andrew Stueber were Michigan’s five NFL draftees during the three-day event. Others were quick to sign undrafted free agent deals in the aftermath of the event.

Michigan added to a few impressive program marks during the event. Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson’s selection with the No. 2 overall pick extended U-M’s streak to 84-straight years with a player drafted. Hutchinson and David Ojabo, who racked up 25 sacks as a pair in 2021, became the eighth and ninth EDGE defenders to be drafted in the Jim Harbaugh era. Every starting EDGE since 2015 has been selected in the draft.

Michigan quote of the day
“Obviously, he can go on the edge, all right? He’s big, so he can go inside on third down and play the 3-technique. And when we’re looking at this guy, I mean the first thing I try to do with every player is, man, working out plays, how can we get the best out of this player, how can we make this player successful. Those are some of the things we thought about. I mean, he’s the tough, aggressive, violent type of guy that we need. Obviously, we can do a lot of things with this player.”
