The Michigan Wolverines went into Lincoln, Nebraska and made a statement on Saturday afternoon, throttling the Cornhuskers by a score of 45-7. As a result, U-M heads into the sixth week of the regular season ranked No. 2 in the land in the updated AP Poll.

The rest of the top five are filled out by Georgia at No. 1, Texas, Ohio State and Florida State, respectively. Penn State, Washington, Oregon, USC and Notre Dame fill out the sixth through 10th spots in this week’s poll.

Additionally, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State are the only teams ranked out of the Big Ten Conference.

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh on where the Nebraska win ranks

Pretty high. Pretty darn high. The guys did a tremendous job, just so focused on their football, it was important. It was an important task — critical — we come in here on the road and play good football. I thought our guys did that and then some, in all phases.

Can’t start a game better than we did today, with taking the opening drive. Tremendous playmaker Roman Wilson and J.J. — what a catch that was. The guys up in the press box were telling me just how good it was when they were watching it on the replay. Keeping his feet in bounds — amazing.

And then Kenneth Grant, talk about a playmaker. That ball was up in the air — I saw that one fully. It was up there just hanging. I don’t know how high that went, but that ball way way up there. Great job by Braiden getting the tip. And then KG, coming down with the rebound the reception, and then he’s getting hit at all angles, holding onto the ball. And then we punch that one in for a score.

Tommy Doman is kicking those kickoffs into the wind, and they’re going deep into the end zone, and that was really good.

About every guy walking out of that locker room right now, even though they’re walking out with humble hearts because we’ve got to go on the road again next week, feels really good about themselves and the way they played. Every single guy. No penalties, no turnovers. For the most part, really played their assignments, were locked in on their football. Tough place to play. Always sold out, always tremendous atmosphere. Tough opponent, the crowd and the elements, too. It was hot out there, and our guys did really well, all the way to the backups when they went in.

What’s next for the Wolverines?

Michigan hits the road for the second week in a row on Saturday night in a trip to Minnesota to take on the 3-2 Gophers. Kickoff from Minneapolis is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast via NBC.
