Wolverine TV: Backfield depth and health, new NIL initiative, more
Michigan football has title aspirations for the 2023 season, but it could likely come down to how healthy the roster stays in some critical spots. For the Wolverines, none are more critical than the run game in setting the tone and identity.
Michigan running backs Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards, when healthy, are one of the best duos in college football. However, both are coming off off-season surgeries. Should we be worried about how they hold up given their injury histories?
“I wasn’t going to like allow that to stop me. My leg would’ve to have been cut off for me to not play,” Edwards said over the weekend. “Same thing with like the broken hand. Just put a cast on it, although I was just carrying it in my non-dominant hand. You know, just gotta do what you gotta do to come up successful and win the game.”
The Wolverine’s Anthony Broome, Chris Balas and Clayton Sayfie discussed Edwards’ comments from over the weekend and if we are concerned about the health of the Michigan backfield.
“[I’m not worried] in the least,” Balas said. “I think that’s why they have one of the best hospitals in the world in their backyard and they are saying these guys are going to be ready to go. Knowing how Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards work and how committed they are, they will be ready to go by the start of the season. That’s great, and it’s not intramurals. You’re out there playing with pain and some kind of injuries all the time.
“When the culture changed in 2020, you’re left with guys like this who play with torn patellar tendons and broken hands and learn how to carry with their other hand, that’s a football player and that’s how you win championships, baby.”
