Michigan football’s opponents for the 2024 and 2025 seasons are officially set with the Big Ten announcing its new model for the next two seasons on Thursday.

The Wolverines will play home games in conference against Maryland, Michigan State, Minnesota, UCLA and Wisconsin in 2024. Michigan travels to Illinois, Ohio State, Rutgers and USC for its road games and hosts all three non-conference opponents at home in Fresno State, Texas, and Arkansas State.

Michigan will head to USC for its first road game against the Trojans since 1957. The last 7 meetings and 8 of 10 overall in series history have taken place at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. USC leads the all-time series by a 6-4 margin.

The UCLA Bruins will head to Ann Arbor for a tilt with the Wolverines in 2024, as well. It will be the first time the two programs have played since the 2000 season. Michigan leads the all-time series 8-3.

The conference is doing away with divisions and moving to a “Flex Protect Plus” scheduling model where each Big Ten team can choose up to three protected rivalries. Michigan has two of them in Michigan State and Ohio State, who will continue to be featured on the schedule well into the future. It also has a “two-play opponent” in Maryland, meaning they will be the only unprotected team on the schedule that they play twice in two years.

The top two teams in the conference will meet in Indianapolis on championship weekend. The 2024 season will also be the first of the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff.

Dates and times were not made available at the time of the release. According to The Athletic, the Big Ten plans to set dates for the games by this December.

2024

Non-conference: vs. Fresno State, vs. Texas, vs. Arkansas State

Home: Maryland, Michigan State, Minnesota, UCLA, Wisconsin

Away: Illinois, Ohio State, Rutgers, USC

2025

Non-conference: vs. New Mexico, at Oklahoma, vs. Central Michigan

Home: Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue

Away: Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan State, Nebraska

The Big Ten plans for every team in the conference to appear on the schedule of all other opponents in a two-year span. The Athletic also reports that the Michigan-Ohio State game will remain on Thanksgiving weekend for the foreseeable future.

“While long-standing staples like Ohio State-Michigan and Indiana-Purdue and the now-traditional Iowa-Nebraska Black Friday game will remain on the final weekend, others may shuffle to other weeks,” Nicole Auerbach and Scott Dochterman reported. “The league previously cycled Michigan State, Penn State, Maryland and Rutgers on Thanksgiving weekend from 2017-19. It also needs to apply extra scrutiny for the regular season’s penultimate week to ensure teams have home and road games over the final two weeks.”
