Michigan Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy (9) is pressured by Bowling Green Falcons linebacker Demetrius Hardamon (11) during second half action Saturday, Sept.16 2023.

The Michigan Wolverines moved to 3-0 on the season with a 31-6 win over Bowling Green on Saturday in Ann Arbor, but it was a sloppy effort. Junior quarterback J.J. McCarthy threw three interceptions, the team had four turnovers overall, and it was not the clean effort fans wanted to see before Big Ten play.

TheWolverine.com’s Anthony Broome and former Michigan defensive lineman Ryan Van Bergen broke down the game after it was all said and done. Van Bergen was happy that the struggles came in a game Michigan was never in danger of losing.

“It was what I am hoping to be a learning experience,” Van Bergen said during the show. “The game ended a little while ago and I had a chance to digest what went down and I’m going to take the optimistic road and say that this is something that will benefit this team. Loeffler being a former Michigan coach and now the head coach at Bowling Green, this guy comes in with all the movtiation of the world. My personal opinion of Scot Loeffler is that he’s one of the best quarterback minds that exists. This is a guy that took a look at J.J. McCarthy, saw some of the things he likes to do where he’s comfortable, and then worked with his defensive coordinator to make sure those things weren’t available to him. Or he saw things he’s used to seeing and took them away.

“I think we got out schemed. I think their coaches put more time into the game plan and that showed up on the field. Michigan got a little outplayed when it came to what we did offensively. Defensively, we looked solid considering we’re still missing some guys. It was a good thing that McCarthy was challenged and that he turned the ball over in this setting and this environment before it mattered more. I hope we can get some really good film and that it’s going to be a long Sunday in the film room. They got the job done and got a W. There are things to be happy about, but things to be concerned about heading into the Big Ten schedule.”
