The University of Michigan has terminated the employment of football co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss, athletic director Warde Manuel announced on Friday afternoon in a statement.

“After a review of University policies, the athletic department has terminated the appointment of co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss. Consistent with university policy, we will have no further comment on this personnel matter,” the statement read.

Weiss released his own statement shortly after: “I am proud of the success we achieved over the last two seasons and grateful to all of the Michigan players, coaches, and staff. The potential of Team 144 knows no bounds. I have nothing but respect for the University of Michigan and the people who make it such a great place. I look forward to putting this matter behind me and returning my focus to the game that I love.”

Weiss was on a leave from the program while campus police investigate “a report of computer access crimes” that took place at Schembechler Hall from Dec. 21-23.

Weiss, who has not been with the team or on the recruiting trail recently while being put on paid administrative leave, had a police presence at his Ann Arbor home last week believed to be related to the university investigation, per the ESPN report.

“I am aware of the ongoing investigation by the University of Michigan Police Department and fully cooperating with investigators. I look forward to the matter being resolved. Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, I will not have any further comment,” Weiss said in a statement to ESPN earlier this week.

Despite the alleged crimes taking place prior to the trip to the Fiesta Bowl, U-M’s campus crime log shows a report made on Jan. 5 from Schembechler Hall.

“An employee reported fraudulent activity involving someone accessing university emails accounts without authorization,” the log reads. “Upon further investigation, It was found that a crime may have been committed.”

This seems to suggest that someone who works in Schembechler Hall reported that another person was accessing other email accounts without their permission. No other information is available, and Weiss was not been cited in the log or the police statement released to ESPN. Michigan legislature says any unauthorized access to someone else’s email account can be considered criminal activity.

Weiss joined Michigan during the 2021 offseason, assuming the title of quarterbacks coach. Last offseason, he was elevated to co-offensive coordinator with offensive line coach Sherrone Moore while retaining quarterback coaching duties.
