The Michigan Wolverines are preparing for a Big Ten Championship game and postseason run, but transfer portal season is right around the corner and the time will come for U-M to start prepping for 2024.

The portal opens next week, and Michigan could have needs in a number of areas. One of them could be at quarterback depending on the decision J.J. McCarthy makes after this season. There have been questions as to whether his successor is currently on the roster or not.

Quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell and the Michigan staff are focused on this week’s game, but he discussed what they look for when it comes to bringing in someone from the outside.

“I think that’s the large majority when you’re recruiting a player or bringing a player in, they have to fit,” Campbell told the media on Wednesday afternoon. “It’s like dating, they gotta like you, you gotta like them. It’s not just taking somebody just because they’re a good player. If they don’t have the intangibles, the leadership qualities, the type of—how they carry themselves, the background, the familiarity of what we’re trying to achieve here.”

Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter knows that portal season is coming soon, and that coaches will have to focus both on the task at hand and building the roster for 2024 and beyond. Michigan has a unique situation, but it is one they welcome this week.

“That’s just college football so I think you’re always looking at roster construction and what’s the best way to build your team,” Minter said. “Obviously, we have what we have now and we’re going to have until, hopefully, January 8th. After that, you’ve got to really have eyes towards what you want the roster to look like next year.

“As the portal opens up, similar to last year, you gotta keep your eyes on guys. We certainly have a few, mainly some positions where we’re really looking knowing we may or may not have some guys back and things like that. I just think that’s part of it in college football is that the timing of it. Different than the NFL where you play the season and free agency open down the road. With the portal, it’s an ongoing deal. Typically, as it opens up officially, I believe, next week, that’ll take some of our time over the first couple of weeks in December to see if there’s something out there for us.”
