Michigan football coaching staff: Where it seems headed as of Feb. 7
As we reported on yesterday’s podcast, Larry Foote is a likely ‘no’ for Michigan D.C., barring a change of heart. So … who will it be? Michigan quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss seems a lock for the co-Offensive Coordinator job with Sherrone Moore, and Jim Harbaugh is now working on finishing his staff for 2022.

COLUMN: Can Harbaugh repair his coaching staff? This week is critical
Harbaugh is working on finalizing his staff this week after the Minnesota Vikings job fell through. Assuming nobody follows Josh Gattis (former O.C., now at Miami) out the door, it will be Sherrone Moore at offensive line and co-offensive coordinator, with quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss promoted to co-O.C., as expected.
Ron Bellamy is expected to move from safeties to wide receivers, a good move for him and one we predicted. Mike Hart, a potential candidate for NFL jobs, per the Detroit News‘ Angelique Chengelis, would continue coach running backs. We’ve also said he could be in line for an associate head coach title, one that could also help keep him in Ann Arbor.
Bellamy, Hart and secondary Steve Clinkscale were huge additions to last year’s staff that helped change the culture of the Michigan program.
In addition, one source on the team told us yesterday Jay Harbaugh was “moving off tight ends,” and probably to defense. He could take Bellamy’s spot. Clinkscale, then, oversees the secondary while adding co-defensive coordinator to his title.

Grant Newsome, a graduate assistant who was expected to go to Minnesota with Harbaugh, could replace Harbaugh as tight ends coach. All of it, of course, depends on keeping the rest of the staff in place.
Harbaugh, meanwhile, is also interviewing Jesse Minter for its defensive coordinator spot. As we’ve said, that one always seemed to be the most logical play. Harbaugh looked at him last year for spots on staff before filling his staff.
Now, the Vanderbilt D.C. and former Baltimore Ravens assistant has a shot. Minter knows Mike Macdonald’s defense inside and out, and he’s also got recruiting experience. He seems to be a natural fit at Michigan.
Miami linebackers coach Anthony Campanile is also on the short list, as previously reported. He could be one to watch if Minter falls through. New defensive line coach Mike Elston could get a look at D.C. if the external options don’t pan out, while George Helow coaches linebackers.
Watch for more on the staff in the hours to come …
