Michigan football countdown to kickoff: 11 days until 2022 season

There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.

Michigan football has only 11 days to go until the 2022 season kicks off, prompting a look back at one of the most famous families in program history.

The No. 11 jersey worn by brothers Francis, Albert and Alvin Wistert were named to the “Michigan Football Legend” category of jerseys during the 2012 season. The program honored five legendary numbers throughout the year and included the famed brothers.

Francis Wistert (’34) was an All-American in football in 1934 and was also a dual-sport star. He won Big Ten MVP in 1934 for the baseball team.

Albert Wistert (’42) was the second of his brothers to achieve All-American status during the 1942 season. He was also the first Michigan player to make the Pro Bowl and was an All-Pro eight times with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Alvin Wistert (’50) made it 3-for-3 with All-American brothers, grabbing honors in both 1948 and 1949. He is the oldest player to be selected for All-American honors after winning it at age 33. This was due to working in a Marine factory assisting in World War II efforts.

Safety and team captain Jordan Kovacs donned the No. 11 jersey during the legacy season in 2012.
