Michigan football countdown to kickoff: 17 days until 2022 season

There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.

Michigan football has 17 days until the 2022 season, which brings us to one of the best players to don the jersey. Today’s shoutout goes to former star linebacker Larry Foote.

Foote, a Detroit native who went to Pershing High School, started 28 of 48 games that he played in Ann Arbor from 1998-2001. He finished his career with 212 tackles, 11 sacks and 53 tackles for loss. His play helped him earn All-Big Ten first-team honors during his junior season in 2000, then was a first-team All-American during his senior year in 2001. He would also win Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year during the 2001 campaign.

On Oct. 27, 2001, Foote set a program record against Iowa by racking up seven tackles for loss in a contest against Iowa. That was a mark that stood until the 2017 season when Khaleke Hudson had eight against Minnesota.

Life after Ann Arbor

Foote was a fourth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2002 and spent the first seven years of his career in the Steel City. He returned home to play for the Detroit Lions in 2009, then went back to Pittsburgh from 2010-13. He finished out his playing career with the Arizona Cardinals in 2014.

The Cardinals gave him his first shot in the coaching ranks in 2015 where he served as an assistant linebackers coach. He was elevated to linebackers coach from 2016-18, then moved to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as its outside linebackers coach from 2019-21, winning a Super Bowl with Tom Brady during the 2020 season. This year, he serves as Tampa Bay’s passing game coordinator and inside linebackers coach.
