Michigan football countdown to kickoff: 41 days until 2022 season
There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.
Michigan has 41 days remaining until the opener of the 2022 season. Head coach Jim Harbaugh and his Wolverines scored 41 points in the Citrus Bowl against Florida in 2016, which capped off a better than expected debut season.
Harbaugh was the jewel at the end of a rough seven-year stretch for the program. Coming into his first year on the job, Michigan was expected to push for a bowl berth and set itself up for the future. In a lot of ways, the 2015 season set the table for both things to occur.
Michigan went 0-2 against its rivals that year (but was an errant snap away from a win over Michigan State), but finished the season 10-3 with a core group of players that would wind up being part of a Big Ten title push in 2016. The 2015 season was all about re-establishing Michigan as a national presence. In many ways, mission accomplished.
It was also the only time Harbaugh has won a postseason game as head coach, which is still used as a knock against him. That is something that no doubt needs to change.

Even with losses to MSU and OSU, both at home, 2015 felt like house money for a program trying to find itself again. The culture was set, the template was laid out and it kicked off what was hopefully a soon-to-be fruitful era. It took seven years to win a Big Ten title, but Harbaugh came in immediately and won with the players he had. Given that a 7-6 and 5-7 season had preceded that, it was clear from the jump he was the man for the job.
