Michigan football countdown to kickoff: 21 days until 2022 season
There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.
Michigan football is 21 days from the 2022 football season. That brings about the most obvious shoutout in this series yet in No. 21 Desmond Howard.
Howard, a star wide receiver at Michigan from 1989-91, is an icon in program history. The Cleveland native was an All-Ohio talent in high school and carried his skill-set headfirst into the Michigan program.
During his career in Ann Arbor, Howard set or tied five NCAA records and 12 Michigan program records. His most notable season came in 1991 where he had 62 catches for 985 yards and 23 total touchdowns to go with 180 yards rushing and 694 return yards. Howard’s season earned him the Heisman Trophy (grabbing 85% of the first-place votes), Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award honors. He was also a first-team All-American. He would finish his Michigan career with 249 rushing yards, 134 receptions for 2,146 yards, 1,211 kick return yards, 339 punt return yards and 37 total touchdowns.
Howard’s next chapter
Howard would go on to be the No. 4 overall pick in the 1992 NFL Draft of the Washington Redskins, where he would play through 1994. The rest of his career included stops with the Jacksonville Jaguars (1995), Green Bay Packers (1996, ’99) – where he was an All-Pro and Super Bowl MVP, Oakland Raiders (1997-98) and Detroit Lions (1999-2002).

After his playing career ended, he transitioned to broadcasting with ESPN. He has been a member of the network’s College GameDay broadcast since 2005. Howard’s No. 21 jersey is retired by Michigan football.
