There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.

Michigan finds itself 23 days away from the start of the 2022 football season. That brings us to a shoutout of one of the best 23s in program history in running back Jamie Morris.

Morris – an Ayer, Massachussetts native – played at Michigan from 1984-87, where he set the school’s all-time rushing record mark for a single season (1,703 yards) and career (4,392 yards). These marks were surpassed by Anthony Thomas and Mike Hart a little over a decade later, but Morris is still the school’s record-holding player for all-purpose yards with 6,201 in his career.

Morris, who was a two-time first-team All-Big Ten performer,, was known as a big-game performer for the Wolverines. Never was this more apparent than that 1986 Michigan season. He suffered a knee injury against Florida State and had to sit out a game. Morris returned to the Michigan lineup and played the best game of his career against the Ohio State Buckeyes. He finished the day with 302 all-purpose yards, including 210 yards rushing, in a 26-24 win over the Buckeyes.

Morris would set a number of records at Michigan, some still active. That list can be viewed below.

• Career rushing yards (1987–2000)
• Career yards from scrimmage (1987–2000)
• Career all-purpose yards (1987–)
• Career 100-yard games (1987–1994)
• Season rushing yards (1987–1995)
• Season yards from scrimmage (1987–1995)
• Season all-purpose yards (1987–2000)
• Season 100-yard games (1988–)
• Career receptions (running back) (1987–)
• Career receiving yards (running back) (1987–2002)
