Michigan football countdown to kickoff: 26 days until 2022 season
There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.
With 26 days until Michigan kicks off the season, let’s take a look at one of the top players of the Jim Harbaugh era so far, No. 26, cornerback Jourdan Lewis.
Lewis contributed right from the jump as a freshman in 2013, registering 17 tackles and two pass breakups in 13 games. The next season, he made 12 appearances with seven starts, tallying 39 tackles, 1.5 stops for loss, two interceptions and six pass breakups.
Then came two seasons to remember, a pair of the best campaigns by a Michigan cornerback in history. In 2015, Harbaugh’s first season, he posted 52 tackles (3.5 for loss), two picks and 20 pass breakups, with that mark ranking third in the nation. He returned kicks and averaged 25.2 yards per return.
That was the first of two seasons in which the Michigan star was named first-team All-Big Ten and first-team All-American.
He played in just 10 games in 2016, his final season, battling injuries that forced him to miss the first three contests. Just two games in after returning, he made the interception of a lifetime to clinch a 14-7 win over Wisconsin.

All told, Lewis finished his Michigan senior season with 27 tackles, 3.5 for loss, two interceptions and nine pass breakups. He helped the Maize and Blue to their first New Year’s Six bowl game since 2011. They lost to Florida State in the Orange Bowl.
Lewis was one of 11 Michigan players to be picked in the 2017 NFL Draft. He was taken by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round and remains on the roster. Lewis has started 39 of his 77 career games and recorded 237 tackles, 14 stops for loss, eight quarterback hits, seven interceptions and 30 pass breakups in five campaigns.
