Michigan football countdown to kickoff: 3 days until 2022 season

There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.

Michigan football finds itself three days away from the start of the 2022 season, which brings us to a shoutout of one of the best No. 3s in program history. Today we look back on the career of defensive back Tripp Welbourne.

Welbourne played safety at Michigan from 1987-90 and was a two-time Unanimous All-American and two-time First-team All-Big Ten performer for his showings in the 1989 and 1990 seasons. Welbourne had five interceptions during his sophomore year in 1988. He also set a record as a senior of 455 punt return yards that would go unbroken until wide receiver Steve Breaston outdid it in 2003.

Welbourne finished his career with 238 tackles, 9 interceptions, 15 passes broken up and two fumble recoveries. Michigan won three Big Ten titles and compiled a record of 36-11-1 during his three years as a starter on the defensive side of the ball.

Welbourne transitioned to the NFL and was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the seventh round of the 1991 draft. He was supposed to be a top-five pick, but fell after reconstructive knee surgery. Two more knee injuries in subsequent years ended his playing career after two games.
