There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.

Michigan football finds itself just 33 days away from the 2022 campaign. Head coach Jim Harbaugh’s 33rd win in Ann Arbor kicked off one of the best stretches under his watch prior to last season.

Coming off a disappointing 8-5 season in 2017, Michigan opened the 2018 season with a loss at Notre Dame. It was disheartening with expectations so high, especially with Shea Patterson coming at quarterback. But it fueled a pretty fun run for the Wolverines.

Michigan handled its business in non-conference games against Western Michigan and SMU, then destroyed the first Scott Frost-led Nebraska squad. A close 20-17 call at Northwestern would follow, lifting their record to 4-1.

Win No. 33 at Michigan came in blowout fashion against the Maryland Terrapins. It served as a springboard into the “Revenge Tour” for the Wolverines. They had lost games to Wisconsin, Michigan State, Penn State and Ohio State during the 2017 campaign and sought to avenge them. They dispatched each team by multiple scores (38-13, 21-7, 42-7) to start fueling what looked like could be a Big Ten title run.

Revenge Tour comes to a halt

Wins over Rutgers and Indiana had them at 10-1, but a 62-39 blowout loss at Ohio State sucked all the momentum out of the program on Nov. 24. That day will go down as one of the most infamously disappointing and disheartening in Michigan history.

The “Revenge Tour” fueled a double-digit win season, but Michigan found itself on the outside looking in for the third time in four seasons under Harbaugh. The OSU game put them in a bit of an identity crisis over the next few seasons, finishing 9-3 in 2019 and 2-4 during the COVID year.

Michigan found a way to crack the code and finally got over the hump last year, taking the monkey off everyone’s backs in Ann Arbor.
