Michigan football countdown to kickoff: 5 days until 2022 season
There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.
Michigan football has 5 days remaining until the 2022 season opener. That means a shoutout is in order for former program star Jabrill Peppers.
Peppers was a five-star prospect and No. 4 overall player in the 2014 class, per the On3 Consensus. His freshman season only saw him play three games and then redshirting due to an injury in his first contest against Appalachian State.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh arrived after Peppers’ freshman season and the two thrived together. Peppers was named the Big Ten’s Tompson-Randle El Freshman of the Year and an All Big Ten first-team defense. CBS Sports and Sports Illustrated named him a second-team All-American for his play. Peppers registered 45 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 10 passes defended. He added 8 catches for 79 yards with 18 rushes for 72 yards and two scores on the year. Peppers’ 568 all-purpose yards ranked fifth on the team while playing both ways.
Peppers was named the Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year, Butkus-Fitzgerald Linebacker of the Year, Rodgers-White Return Specialist of the Year, and a Unanimous All-American in 2016. He was also first-team all-conference on both defense and special teams. Peppers recorded 72 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, four sacks, one interception and forced a fumble that year while also rushing 27 times for 167 yards and three touchdowns. His play earned him fifth place in voting for the 2016 Heisman Trophy.
Peppers entered the 2017 NFL Draft and was the No. 25 overall pick of the Cleveland Browns. He has since spent time with the Browns, New York Giants and New England Patriots, the latter of which he signed with this offseason.
