Michigan football countdown to kickoff: 57 days until 2022 season
There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.
Each day, we have written a piece around a number of significance that correlates to the days remaining until Michigan kicks off. Truth be told, the pickings are slim at No. 57, but we have a candidate to profile nonetheless.
Maynard Morrison fits the bill and is arguably the best player to wear No. 57 in program history. Morrison was an All-American at Michigan, playing fullback, center and linebacker from 1929-31. Coach Harry Kipke famous called him the best linebacker he ever saw play. His time in Ann Arbor included All-American honors in 1931.

Morrison had plenty of accolades during his Michigan career. He was a first-team All-Big Ten selection in both 1930 and 1931. The University of Michigan inducted him into its Hall of Honor in 1982, while Royal Oak High School put him in its Hall of Fame in 1998. Morrison was also selected as one of the 100 greatest Michigan football players by the “Motown Sports Arrival,” who placed him 50th on the all-time team.
Michigan’s Bentley Historical Library weighed in on Morrison’s time at Michigan:
Ranked by his coach, Harry Kipke, as the finest linebacker he ever saw, the stocky 212 pound Morrison stood head and shoulders above all other centers in the nation in 1931, playing on a Conference championship team. “No one ever got past him,” Kipke said of the player who was selected by Grantland Rice for his All-American team.
