Michigan football countdown to kickoff: 58 days until 2022 season
There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.
With 58 days until kickoff, let’s talk about No. 58 for Michigan, who had an incredible game in the 2011 season opener against Western Michigan.
It was an odd day all around, weather and otherwise. The day started out with beautiful weather, with 90-degree heat, before a storm brewed and forced a delay. Ultimately, Michigan and WMU decided to call the game with 1:27 to go in the third quarter, marking the first time a U-M game was not played in full due to weather. The Wolverines won, 34-10.
Back to No. 58, linebacker Brandon Herron. The 6-2, 221-pounder didn’t have a great career at Michigan — in fact, eight of his 42 career tackles came in the tilt against the Broncos — but this was a signature game, and he set multiple school records.
Herron notched an interception and returned it 94 yards for a touchdown midway through the second quarter, and he recovered a Jordan Kovacs-forced fumble for a 29-yard score with 9:27 to go in the third stanza. He became the first Michigan player in the modern era to record two defensive touchdowns in a single game. All told, those were the only two touchdowns of his career, while the interception was the first and the fumble recovery was the second of his career.

Herron is the first and only Michigan player with two touchdown returns in game since Tom Harmon (kickoff return and punt return) in 1940 against Cal.
Herron’s 94-yard touchdown was the longest interception return for a touchdown in Michigan program history. Per the program, the previous record was 92 yards, held by Ken Tureaud (vs. UCLA, Sept. 30, 1961) and Thom Darden (vs. UCLA, Sept. 25, 1971). It was also Michigan’s first interception for a score in two seasons, dating back to Donovan Warren‘s 40-yard return early in the Oct. 10, 2009 game at Iowa.
