Michigan football countdown to kickoff: 7 days until 2022 season
There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.
Michigan finds itself a week away from the 2022 season opener, which gives us a look back at a great No. 7 in program history. Today’s shoutout goes to quarterback Chad Henne.
Henne was a five-star prospect in the 2004 class and made an impact instantly in Ann Arbor. He entered his freshman season as the third-string quarterback behind Matt Gutierrez and Clayton Richard. However, an injury to Gutierrez opened the door for him to state the season opener. He was only the second true freshman to start at quarterback in Michigan history. Rick Leach was the last in 1975, who also wore No. 7.
That season, he and freshman running back Mike Hart were a shot in the arm to a talented offensive group that would win the Big Ten.
Michigan stumbled to 7-5 in 2005, but bounced back in 2006 with an 11-2 season and Henne drawing second-team All-Big Ten honors. The 2007 season had him dealing with injuries and plenty of other adversity, but he finished the year with 1,938 yards, 17 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Henne capped off his college career with a win over Urban Meyer and Florida in the Capital One Bowl and was named the game’s MVP. He was awarded first-team All-Big Ten as a senior, additionally.
