There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 3 opener against Colorado State. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.

With 16 days until kickoff, we discuss ‘Shoelace’ — No. 16, Denard Robinson — one of the most electric players in not only Michigan football history but in the sport’s history.

Robinson was a four-star recruit and the No. 142 overall player in the 2009 recruiting class, according to On3’s Consensus rankings. He impacted right away and wound up in the Wolverines’ record books. Each time his highlights make their rounds on social media, they go viral. His combination of speed, quickness and awareness, along with his infectious smile and love for life, made him a fan favorite.

It all started on his first play from scrimmage. Broken plays can be very dangerous for someone with Robinson’s skillset, and he proved that with a 43-yard touchdown run after dropping the snap. The Michigan quarterback later admitted he forgot the play, which forced the miscue.

All told in his Michigan career, Robinson appeared in 49 games with 37 starts (35 at signal-caller), taking over the main quarterback job his second season. He set the NCAA record for career rushing yards by a quarterback (4,495) and became the fourth player in the sport’s history to pass for 2,500 yards and rush for 1,500 yards in a single season twice (2010-11). Five have done so now.

Robinson holds the Michigan record for career total offense (10,769 yards) and is the program’s all-time leader in touchdowns scored (91). He is the school’s second leading rusher with 4,495 career yards, trailing only running backs coach Mike Hart, and ranks third in career rushing touchdowns (42) and is tied for second with 20 career 100-yard rushing games. Robinson is fourth in career passing yardage (6,250) and touchdown passes (49). He also has six of the top 10 single-game offensive outputs in school history.

Robinson’s Michigan highlights include gaining 502 yards of total offense in a 2010 win at Notre Dame and throwing the game-winning touchdown pass to beat the Irish at The Big House the following season. He also led Michigan to a 40-34 win over Ohio State. That marked the first time the Maize and Blue beat the Buckeyes since 2003. Robinson threw three touchdown passes and ran for two — accounting for all of his team’s TDs.

Robinson was hired by Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh this offseason as assistant director of player personnel, and he’s already made an early impact with recruits who have visited.
