Michigan football DL Julius Welschof enters transfer portal

Michigan football defensive lineman Julius Welschof has entered the transfer portal, according to On3’s Matt Zenitz. The graduate EDGE defender will have one year of eligibility remaining wherever he decides to attend next.
Welschof, a Miesbach, Bavaria, Germany native, was a three-star prospect in the 2018 class and graduated from FOS Altoetting in his home country. He suited up in all 14 games this season for the Wolverines, recording 6 total tackles. Welschof ends his career having played in 34 career games in Ann Arbor.
Welschof was part of an EDGE group that had a lot of depth this season, which limited his role with the team. He is good friends with former teammate Aidan Hutchinson, now the presumed NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year with the Detroit Lions. Some had speculated that Welschof (6-7, 268) could be the next Hutchinson, but that never quite materialized this season.

“My coach told me, ‘We don’t need you to be another Aidan. You need to be your own self,’” Welschof said, via The Detroit News. “There was one Aidan, and now we have a lot of guys in our room with different strengths and skills, so we’re gonna get everybody on the field with their best strengths they have. There might not be an Aidan, who’s an all-around, good-at-everything player, but we have a lot of guys with different strengths, so it’s up to the coach if he wants to have certain packages. I’m trying to show them all I’ve got for this fall camp. I’m going to be the next Aidan … or the next Julius.”
Michigan brought in an EDGE through the transfer portal in former Coastal Carolina’s Josiah Stewart, who will factor into the rotation next season. The Wolverines will also have Jaylen Harrell, Braiden McGregor, Derrick Moore, potentially Eyabi Okie and others heading into the 2023 campaign.
