WATCH: Donovan Edwards, Michael Barrett react to national title win
The Michigan Wolverines grabbed the program’s first national championship since the 1997 season on Monday night in a 34-13 win over the Washington Huskies at NRG Stadium in Houston.
After the game went final, players, coaches and their families took to the field to celebrate the achievement. Among the most grateful was running back Donovan Edwards, who had six carries for 104 yards and two touchdowns in the contest from 41 and 46 yards out, respectively.
Edwards and Michigan spoke their goals into existence for this season, and he discussed what it meant after the game.
“This year I realized that I was stressing myself out and I was putting pressure on myself that I shouldn’t,” Edwards said. “My therapist talked to me about putting expectations on myself. And you shouldn’t do that because when you don’t receive that expectation that you put on yourself, you’re just going to get into a cluster and a repeated cycle of, ‘Okay, I’m going to do this.’ And if it doesn’t happen, you’re going to be mad about it.
“So today I just relieved myself. I saw my therapist this week. I just let everything be free. I’m not even gonna worry about this. I’m just gonna let God does what he does and just control me and just control me in this game. What a beautiful feeling.”
Linebacker Michael Barrett weighs in
“It still hasn’t hit me yet, man,” Barrett said. “We knew we’d be here. We knew the type of preparation it was going to take. The type of determination it was going to take. The type of work it was going to take.

And we did that, day in and day out, man. And all these guys, we trusted each other, man. We trusted, we knew that we could get in this moment. We knew what it was going to take. And we just continued to grind, man, regardless of what was thrown at us. Regardless of what was said we just continue to keep our head down and just drive.”
