Michigan’s passing game still needs work, but there were a few surprises there Saturday in the Blue team’s 17-0 win over the Maize. Bryce Underwood completed 12 of 26 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown — an 88-yard, double flea-flicker to tight end Jalen Hoffman on the game’s last play — along with an interception, but also had a few passes dropped in his Michigan Stadium debut.

Michigan sophomore quarterback Jadyn Davis, meanwhile, struggled to 6-of-17 for 74 yards and two interceptions and had two other near picks. Both of his INTs were snagged by sophomore corner Jeremiah Lowe, including an out he jumped on the sideline.

The Wolverines’ projected starting receivers didn’t play much, which didn’t help the passing stats. Indiana transfer Donaven McCulley hauled in a 25-yarder on a nice throw from Davis for the Maize team, but Davis’ second longest reception — 20 yards to Logan Forbes — came on a tipped ball, a fortunate bounce. Davis had one long ball down the right sideline that hit Peyton O’Leary’s fingers, but the veteran couldn’t haul it in.

Underwood, meanwhile, found a surprising target in former Michigan walk-on Jalen Hoffman. With Hogan Hansen out (banged up, we’ve heard), Hoffman took advantage with 7 receptions for 148 yards, including the 88-yarder. Sophomore Channing Goodwin hauled in 3 catches for 23 yards, including a 15- and a 7-yarder to the left side in front of the corners for nice gains on one drive. Underwood had at least two balls dropped, including a well-placed right sideline bomb off freshman Jamar Browder‘s hands.

Michigan Maize team sophomore Jordan Marshall carried only 6 times for 9 yards in a limited role, but his backfield competition, Alabama transfer Justice Haynes (on the Maize), looked the part. He ran for 51 yards on 6 carries, including a 26-yarder in which he bounced outside for a big gain. Sophomore Micah Ka’apana carried 15 times for 34 yards for the Maize team in a backup role, but West Michigander Bryson Kuzdzal was the surprise here. He rushed 15 times for 105 yards for the Maize, including a long of 30, in vying for No. 3 honors.

On defense, linebacker Cole Sullivan led the Maize with 5 solo tackles and 2 assists, while corner Jo’Ziah Edmond also looked good with some nice coverage along with four tackles. Frosh linebacker Chase Taylor notched three stops and a tipped ball at the line to prevent a completion.

Blue team corner Shamari Earls also provided some nice coverage, though he got away with a pass interference on a long pass intended for O’Leary. He registered five tackles to lead the blue.

Punter Hudson Hollenbeck, finally, did work for both teams, and was solid. He punted twice for 90 yards for the Maize and three times for 117 (39 avg., long of 45) on a somewhat windy day.
