Michigan football getting Mike Sainristil back for 2023 season
Michigan football will be getting one of its biggest pieces back for the 2023 season. Senior captain Mike Sainristil announced Sunday night that he will return to the program for a 5th year and pass on the opportunity to enter the 2023 NFL Draft.
Sainristil played wide receiver for his first 3 years in a Michigan uniform before switching over to defensive back, where he has started all 13 games at the nickel position this season.
He made the announcement late Sunday night via his Twitter account.
“I want to start off by thanking Coach Harbaugh and the University of Michigan for an amazing 4 years,” Sainristil wrote. “The opportunity coach gave me when he offered was one that changed by life beyond football. My family and I can’t thank you enough coach! The season is not over, in fact it is just getting started. Just like my time here at the university.
“With that being said, I will be back for my 5th year as a Wolverine and won’t be entering my name in the 2023 NFL Draft after the season.

Sainristil has been an honorable mention All-Big Ten performer this year as voted on by the coaches and media. The former 3-star recruit has appeared in 45 games in his Michigan career, mostly at wide receiver prior to this season. He had 51 total tackles (5.5 for loss), 2 sacks and 7 passes defended. Michigan teammates voted him a team captain ahead of the 2022 season and he should maintain that role as long as he stays in Ann Arbor.
Sainristil and Michigan will take the next few weeks to prepare for the College Football Playoff, where they will take on No. 3 TCU at the Fiesta Bowl. Kickoff on Dec. 31 is set for 4 p.m. ET on ESPN.
