On this week’s Thursday edition of The Wolverine show on our YouTube channel (and in podcast feeds everywhere), Anthony Broome and Chris Balas discuss Michigan football defensive coordinator Jesse Minter’s appearance on the “In The Trenches” podcast and some of the key takeaways.

Chief among them was the discussion about sophomore Amorion Walker and the No. 2 cornerback battle, which appears wide open coming out of spring football. Walker did not have the best showing in the spring game with junior wide receiver Peyton O’Leary getting the best of him much of the day to the tune of six catches for 126 yards. However, Minter said this week he thinks it could be a key moment in Walker’s development.

“I think he might not like me saying this, but I think one of the best things that happened to him was the spring game — going through a little bit of adversity, having guys make plays,” Minter said. “The toughest part about being an elite corner — and I’ve always been a DB guy — is really the mental side of it … the down-after-down, locked-in mindset that it takes to be an elite corner, because in a game like 70 plays, they might throw the ball at your guy six times. If you’re relaxed on one of those, it can lead to a bad play … and if you can’t handle the bad play and it leads to another bad play, then that’s where the snowball effect occurs.”

Broome and Balas run through Walker and the candidates to compete with him, as well as other spots of strength on the defense and if the transfer portal is an option to add competition. Also discussed is signee center Papa Kante‘s departure from Michigan basketball, where star Hunter Dickinson might be leaning and remaining transfer portal options.
