Michigan football running back Hassan Haskins was the talk of the afternoon at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, ripping off 27 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. That mark led all running backs and was five off the record for the position, which was set by Kansas City Chiefs running back Jerick McKinnon in 2014. Haskins did not participate in the 40-yard dash or other field drills, but he sure was impressive on the bench.
Michigan hockey has now outscored Michigan State, 27-10 this season and is 5-0 against the Spartans during the campaign. The Wolverines have now beaten Michigan State in 10 out of the last 11 meetings. Friday night’s victory at Yost Ice Arena meant a little bit more, too, with it standing as a victory in game one of the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. Michigan just needs one more victory to move on to the semifinals, and could end the best-of-three series Saturday night. If necessary, the two teams will square off Sunday.
Michigan Wolverines baseball handed No. 21 Maryland its first loss of the season with a 7-4 victory over the Terrapins Friday. Two-sport athlete Joey Velazquez, also a linebacker on the football team, connected for a pinch-hit, three-run home run off the left field foul pole in the eighth inning to break a tie game and gave Michigan the 7-4 lead in a high-level game involving two conference title contenders. The win marked head coach Erik Bakich‘s 300th career win, and it fittingly came at East Carolina University, his alma mater.
