Michigan football will likely spend the first part of the season without head coach Jim Harbaugh around on Saturday with him serving a multiple-game suspension. But might it actually add an edge to the Wolverines in a year that has massive expectations?

Former Notre Dame quarterback and college analyst Brady Quinn thinks it might actually be beneficial, saying that it could be a galvanizing moment for the Michigan football program.

“And actually, the suspension allows Jim Harbaugh to be there all week, he just can’t be there during game day,” Quinn said on a recent edition of The Rich Eisen Show. “And I think if you had a young team that was inexperienced or maybe breaking in a new quarterback that would be a concern, but that’s not the case with this group.”

“JJ McCarthy returns, you mention Blake Corum, (Donovan) Edwards obviously in the backfield, their offensive line won the Joe Moore Award again for the best offensive line in college football. They’re all back. Seven of 11 starters [return] on defense led by Junior Colson, so this is a very experienced upperclassman group. And as far as the staff goes too, that’s intact as well, not a lot of sweeping changes there. So they’re prepared to basically handle this.”

Michigan quote of the day

“That road trip to Maryland the week before you play in The Big Game is one that does not need to be taken lightly. Maryland has got some firepower. They played Michigan closer than most last year. I think that that group could be a dangerous one, especially when traveling to College Park in the second to last week of the season. When everyone’s talking about ‘What a great win on the road against Penn State!’? And ‘Hey, get ready for next week! Ohio State is coming to town!’? Be careful of the Terps.”
