12 days until Michigan football: Inside Josh Wallace's experience
There’s much anticipation heading into the Michigan Wolverines football season, and TheWolverine.com is counting down the days until the Sept. 2 opener against East Carolina. We’ll discuss current Michigan events, the upcoming season and/or take a look at a significant number that correlates with how many days remain until kickoff, whether it be a player’s jersey number, a year, a date, a score, etc.
Michigan football enters the 2023 season without a ton of question marks to its name, but the cornerback situation was arguably its top storyline. Gone are DJ Turner and Gemon Green from last season. Will Johnson is the de facto No. 1, but still is green and has a lot of football ahead of him.
This was the position group by far with the most amount of questions and needed to add a body. Johnson is coming off off-season knee surgery and is expected to be ready to go for the start of the year, but any setback in his recovery meant only 44 snaps of experience behind him on the roster. The Wolverines needed to address that.
Transfer Josh Wallace does that in a major way with 39 games of experience and 2,197 career snaps played. He totaled 140 tackles, 7 stops for loss, 1 sack, 3 interceptions, 24 pass breakups, 2 fumble recoveries and 1 forced fumble in four seasons at UMass.

Now, he is expected to fill a starting role next to Johnson to start the year. Sophomore Amorion Walker has been injured and Ja’Den McBurrows has not done enough to supplant him. He says that level of competition concerns are overblown, and Michigan believes it too given its trust in pursuing him. Wallace may not be a star, but there is plenty of optimism that he can be a worthy piece on the other side of Johnson.
