Michigan football is expected to compete for a national title in 2023, and nobody in Ann Arbor will run from those expectations. A prominent voice believes it to be the case, too, ranking the Wolverines No. 2 heading into the 2023 season.

FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt said on his podcast this week that he has Michigan set right behind Georgia coming out of spring ball, citing their balance on offense and defense and the talent that returns.

“After the post-spring transfer portal window, Michigan still remains my No. 2 team heading into next year,” Klatt said. “They have so much talent coming back and this has been the best team in the Big Ten over the last two years. They are great on the offensive line and the defensive line, they can run and have got probably one of the best cornerbacks in college football, if not the best, in Will Johnson. … Their defense is going to be fantastic.

“Then you look at the offensive side, they have reloaded on the offensive line and in the transfer portal, as well as developed what they already had. Sherrone Moore is an excellent offensive line coach and offensive coordinator. J.J. McCarthy is going to be a year older. Blake Corum is coming back. Donovan Edwards is back. This team is going to be really, really good.”

Here are Klatt’s full rankings heading into the season:

Michigan quote of the day

“I’m the type of guy that you have to kick out of the weight room. I didn’t even want to be in the weight room. I wanted to eat McDonald’s. I didn’t want to eat rice and chicken. I wasn’t me, and the only one that could have got myself out of that was me. It took a while. I’d go to the weight room one day and then not come in for the next four days. I didn’t want to do anything. Then I realized, why am I feeling bad for myself? I’m blessed. People would die to be in my position. … That’s when it clicked.”
