Michigan football: Is there a disconnect with how national media views OSU rivalry?

Michigan football has beaten the Ohio State Buckeyes by a combined score of 87-50 over the last two matchups, taking a rivalry back that had long eluded them. Despite that, the Vegas odds still have Ohio State as the betting favorite to win the Big Ten and more of a threat to win the national title.

In addition, PFF’s top-100 players for the 2024 class have double the amount of Buckeyes (12) compared to Wolverines (6). Michigan brings back plenty of contributors that have had a large role to play in the last to wins over OSU.

So is there a national disconnect somewhere? Chris Balas, Clayton Sayfie and Anthony Broome discussed the state of the rivalry and more in our Monday night live show on YouTube.

“If you look at what Ohio State accomplished against Georgia, they were a missed field goal away from winning a national championship, probably,” Balas said. “How would Michigan have fared against Georgia? Given what they did against TCU? We’ll never know, but I think that Ohio State with its passing attack was probably a little bit of the kryptonite for Georgia.

“So they matched up a little bit better against them. Michigan did an incredible job [in The Game] thanks to defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. Ohio State moved pretty well between the twenties, but Michigan mixed it up and kept them out of the end zone. To hold that team to 23 points and when it was 10-3 to keep them in the game.

That is one of the things that we should be talking about, more about that last game. It was the same thing in the 1990s. They had all the stars and as Bo Schembechler said, ‘they’re gonna throw out all those great backs and those great receivers and those great quarterbacks, but we’re gonna win it as a team’.”
