Game recap: Michigan football rolls East Carolina in season opener

McCarthy had a huge game, finishing 26-of-30 passing for 280 yards and 3 touchdowns. ECU was crashing in on run plays and loading the box, so Michigan used its pass game to capitalize.

“Everyone saw what we did last year,” McCarthy said. “We were smashing, pounding the football, doing our thing. Teams are going to prepare for that, especially ECU. They just went all offseason trying to stop that, so it was an opportunity for us as a pass game to capitalize. Coach Campbell did a phenomenal job calling plays today. He’s helped me personally so much this offseason, and I can’t wait to see what that dude does in the future for us.”

McCarthy started all but the season opener for Michigan last season and is now the guy. He feels much better than a year ago.

“I was actually talking to some of the boys in the locker room yesterday. I was like, ‘Man, I get this weird feeling because I feel so good,'” the Michigan quarterback said. “Last year, I was dealing with the shoulder injury, dealing with the quarterback battle and there was just a lot of resistance and a lot of stuff to push through. And this one just felt effortless, it felt uplifting every single snap. It felt like everything was going right, and it was a beautiful feeling.”

Corum added that ECU was crashing the gaps on run plays, but he’s more than fine with the Michigan pass game getting going.

“Were they?” he said with a laugh. “But that’s what we expected. I expected them to drop a little more, especially after 9 started throwing it over their head. But coming into the game, if you watch some of the videos from their press conferences and stuff, they wanted to stop the run. I think they would die trying. But overall, per average per run, I think it was still up there. Yeah, teams want to do that, please. We’ll keep throwing. Teams will have to back up sooner or later.”
