Michigan Wolverines football head coach Jim Harbaugh kicked off the first game week of the 2023 season with a message for the status quo of college sports and more in his first weekly press conference of the year.

Of course, Harbaugh will be forced to sit out the next three Saturdays as he serves a school-imposed three-game suspension. Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter will run the show against ECU, and he also made an appearance on Monday in a meeting with the Michigan media.

On this week’s Monday show, The Wolverine’s Anthony Broome, Chris Balas and Clayton Sayfie discussed Harbaugh’s comments on college football and revenue sharing and what we might hear from him over the next few weeks.

“It seemed to me that when he said that he brought [these issues] up in 2020 and 2022 that when you do that people are going to take shots at you and your character is going to be criticized, it was almost as if he says saying maybe this is one of the reasons the NCAA is focused on me when you look at this other stuff that is going on out there,” Balas said. “Maybe I’m reading too much into that, but that was something I took out of that.

“Something else I took out of what he said was when he was talking about his relationship with [athletic director] Warde Manuel and how he was informed of the three-game suspension…. Anyone who thinks that this was Jim saying, ‘Maybe we should just give it a three-game suspension and get it over with,’ I don’t think knows Jim Harbaugh well. He was prepared to take this thing [to the end], but I do believe most at Michigan believe it was the proper course of action to get this thing over as soon as possible.”

Also discussed this week were Minter’s approach to Saturday’s game, where Michigan’s defensive position battles stand, superlatives and predictions for the 2023 season and questions from our message board and live viewers on the YouTube channel.
