Michigan football has different leadership at the quarterback position these days in J.J. McCarthy, but the table was set by Cade McNamara. He led the team to a win over Ohio State, Big Ten Title and trip to the College Football Playoff in 2021, which kickstarted the run the program is currently on.

McCarthy won the job fair and square last year and was able to take the program to similar heights. McNamara transferred to Iowa, and now looks to put the Hawkeyes in position to compete for a Big Ten Championship.

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh was asked to discuss his former signal-caller at Big Ten Football Media Days, where he revealed there is no bad blood with his former captain and signal-caller.

“We go back a long way. And there’s somebody that went into a game in 2020, we were down 17 points and just started bringing us back right from the minute he went in the game. Got a big hit right before halftime and then you saw, saw the gravel in the gut that he had and brought our team back for an overtime win. And then took off from there,” Harbaugh said. “Beat Ohio State, won the Big Ten championship. He’s one of those great Michigan men. Now he’s a Hawkeye, but the love doesn’t change.

“J.J. saw everything in the way Cade would compete and grind. He wasn’t there — my most memorable moment with Cade was the 2020 game, we’re at Rutgers, we’re down 17 points and he went into the game. And it was just like the spark, throwing the ball with no conscience and just playing free.

“And from that moment on that was the player he was. I remember he got a big hit right before halftime, too. And then just gravel in his gut went out there. Love Cade and certainly J.J. was in the same quarterback room and saw all those same attributes. It was tremendous.”

Michigan quote of the day

“But I see they’re having their meetings, and hopefully, things can change, because you know, the running back position has always, and still is, a valuable position. I think it means a lot to the game. You know, you have greats. Walter Payton, Barry Sanders. Then you have now, Derrick Henry and all the guys. So it’s like, those guys mean a lot to the game, man. Why not treat them as such? But like I said, I can’t talk too much about it.

“Yeah, it frustrates me from the outside looking in, but I’m not there, you know I’m not there yet. So I don’t want to speak too much on it, but you know looking at it, it’s a little frustrating.”
