Jim Harbaugh says Sherrone Moore has 'knocked it out of the park', sees several future HCs on staff
Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh and his staff have helped flip things in a positive direction over the last two seasons. Harbaugh has always had a strong set of assistants around him, but he might have his best group heading into 2023.
The talk about most valuable assistants starts with offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Sherrone Moore, who takes on sole playcalling duties this year. Moore is heading into his sixth season with Michigan and has steadily risen up the ranks.
Moore joined the program in 2018 and spent three seasons coaching the tight ends before being elevated to co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 2021-22. Now, he finds himself helming an offense for a legitimate national title contender, which will put him squarely on the radar of schools looking to hire a head coach next cycle.

Harbaugh told the media Thursday afternoon at Wayne State that it can be hard to pinpoint who becomes a star in the profession, but that Moore has impressed every step of the way.
“You don’t know,” Harbaugh said. “You plan those seeds and you don’t know which ones will grow. He’s knocked it out of the park at every step. Checked every box. Players love him, respected by all. It motivates me, and I know the other coaches, too.
“When they’re all so good, you wake up in the morning it gets you out of bed. I gotta get ready, I gotta bring the A game. To be able to contribute something good and positive to this football team when there are that many other good coaches in the room, it’s inspiring. It challenges you to compete and to be better versions of yourself. I see that taking place amongst the entire staff. I know I’m not the only one that feels that way and is challenged and motivated that way.”
Harbaugh sees several future head coaches on Michigan staff
Harbaugh knows that you are only as successful as the staff that is around you. His current group might be one for the ages, and Moore is far from the only future head coach he sees at Michigan.

“I have total trust in the coaching staff that we have,” Harbaugh said. “I’ll make a bold statement right now, if you want a bold statement, sometimes you like bold statements. Every one of our assistant coaches will be a head coach. I’d even say four after this season. The talent, the coaching acumen and talent are really good. I won’t put any limitations on Sherrone Moore, he’s so good. He’s so good.”
Harbaugh’s staff includes Moore, quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell, running backs coach Mike Hart, wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy, tight ends coach Grant Newsome, defensive line coach Mike Elston, linebackers coach Chris Partridge, defensive backs coach/co-defensive coordinator Steve Clinkscale, safeties coach/special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Jesse Minter.
All of them play a large role in keeping Michigan’s recent winning pedigree at a high level.
“I was really surprised after the 2021 season,” Harbaugh said. “You felt like this is as good as it can get with everybody. Players, coaches, staff going in the same direction. 2022, there was that cultural momentum that seemed even better. Now, I’m kind of saying it’s gotta be as good as it can get.
“Seeing our players, our staff, our coaches, seems like there’s even more cultural momentum. It’s been fun to be around.”
