Wolverine TV: Jim Harbaugh on J.J. McCarthy injury, why Michigan is 'scary good,' more
Michigan Wolverines head football coach Jim Harbaugh met with the media Tuesday afternoon during the team’s second full week of spring practices.
Here are just some of the topics that the Michigan head coach hit on:
• The J.J. McCarthy situation — Michigan’s sophomore quarterback is dealing with a shoulder ailment that he suffered during the 2021 season. Harbaugh said he doesn’t know if it stemmed from one hit or just wear and tear, but McCarthy opted not to have surgery on it and is instead going through rehab. He’s getting reps in practice, but is not throwing. Harbaugh did not detail the potential timetable for a return for the Wolverines’ former four-star recruit who is expected to compete for the starting quarterback job ahead of the 2022 campaign.
• The Minnesota Vikings interview — Harbaugh discussed his flirtation with the Minnesota Vikings. He interviewed with the franchise back in February, and while there are mixed reports as to exactly what happened including that he did not receive a job offer, Harbaugh said he ultimately decided to remain at Michigan. He explained that his first contract was for seven years, and since that time had passed, he decided to look around.
• Michigan’s spring practices — Harbaugh said the “state of Michigan football is scary good,” on multiple occasions, and said he had many reasons for that. One of them was the defensive line — while Michigan lost three starters to the NFL, including two first-round picks in Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo, Harbaugh said there are guys who are set to step up and could potentially be the next in line for stardom. He also discussed the vibe around the building and how, despite some calling the offseason “tumultuous,” he believes they’ve taken the momentum from the 2021 season — which included a win over Ohio State, Big Ten title and College Football Playoff berth — and ran with it. The Wolverines are practicing three times per week from now until the April 2 spring game, which will be the first of its kind with fans in the stands since the spring of 2019.
